Exploring the 4 Main Reasons People Change Jobs

by | May 8, 2015 | Recruiter Training, Top Echelon Blog

It’s true that we are all creatures of habits.  These habits are often established at a very young age.

The impact of our past conditioning can dramatically limit our results as an adult.  This reality holds true for the candidates you represent.  When you interview candidates, make sure that you take special notice of patterns that they have established throughout their work history.

Below are the four main reasons people change jobs:

1.) Unreasonable manager

2.) Personality conflict

3.) Lack of challenge

4.) Every two years, every three years (i.e., time for a change)

It is no coincidence that they’ve developed patterns in their work history.  When an individual changes their job, they will not necessarily accept the perfect opportunity.

Often, they leave their current employer for the same reasons they left past employers.  It’s important that you pay special attention to the patterns of the candidates you represent if you want to place more candidates in opportunities in the coming year.

Remember, it is NOT your job to agree or disagree with your candidates.  You need to listen to their hot buttons and priorities and then present opportunities that address what is most important to them.  That is when they will accept job offers that are extended by your clients.

If your candidate has experienced a life-changing event, (death, divorce, relocation, marriage, or birth of a child), these major events can encourage an individual to get out of their comfort zone and set different priorities in their life.  Often, you can help walk them through the process of determining what is currently most important to them.

Always remember to ask the most important question you can ask during your interview: “If you were your boss, what changes would you have made.”

The reason candidates talk to you is simple . . . there is something going on at their current job that they can’t change.  That is why they will go through the trauma of a job change and that is the real reason they will consider a new opportunity.
